Time and Target Outcome

Performance in Initiating and Delivering Clinical Research

QUARTER 2: 1st July 2016 - 30th September 2016

The Government wishes to see a dramatic and sustained improvement in the performance of providers of NHS services in initiating and delivering clinical research. The aim is to increase the number of patients who have the opportunity to participate in research and to enhance the nation’s attractiveness as a host for research.

From July 2013, for Clinical Trials, providers holding National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) contracts are required to publish outcomes against the 70 day benchmark and delivery to time and target metrics:

- 70 Day Benchmark: There is an expectation that all Clinical Trials will be approved, opened and have recruited their first participant within 70 Days of a Valid Research Application (VRA) being received by the Trust’s R&D Department.

- Time and Target Benchmark: There is an expectation that all Commercial Sponsored Clinical Trials will recruit to “Time and Target” i.e. targets that are set for recruitment during study Initiation will be met during study Delivery.

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was required to start reporting this information from Quarter 2, 2014 (July-September 2014).

The tables on this webpage include the latest reports on Performance in Initiating and Delivering research up to Q2 of the 2016/17 reporting year - 1st July 2016 - 30th September 2016.   The data includes a full 12 months of data on research activity from October 2015 to September 2016

TABLE 1 – Performance in Initiating Clinical Research Q2 2016/2017 : 70 Day Benchmark

Table 1 provides information about the 70 Day Benchmark and reasons for cases where the target has not been met. For example, studies may be delayed due to contracting issues with the study sponsor, or research into rare diseases may only expect to recruit one or two participants a year, making it very difficult to ensure recruitment occurs within 70 days.

The table is an accurate representation of trial status at the point of reporting as of 30th September 2016.

TABLE 2 – Performance in Delivering Clinical Research Q2 2016/2017 : Time and Target Benchmark

Table 2 provides information about Commercially Sponsored research hosted by Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.  Only studies that have completed or closed to recruitment in the previous 12 months are reported on here to provide information only on studies where targets can be evaluated against actual accruals.

The table is an accurate representation of trial recruitment at the point of reporting as of 30th September 2016.
