Welcome to Voluntary Services and thank you for considering volunteering at one of our hospitals.
You do not need any special skills to become a volunteer. Our volunteer team is made up of a diverse range of people who share qualities such as friendliness, reliability and a genuine wish and willingness to help.
The services offered by volunteers complement the health care provided by our staff and bring many benefits to patients, their families and visitors.
Our volunteers undertake a wide variety of activities including:
- Meeting and greeting our patients and visitors and directing and escorting people around the hospital
- Helping on wards, assisting patients with the completion of menu cards, keeping information boards and leaflet racks tidy and up to date
- Befriending patients - reading the paper or simply chatting
- Supporting activity groups - which might involve encouraging patients to engage in a variety of enjoyable activities such as word games, puzzles and reminiscing
- Assisting wards and departments with clerical tasks
Our voluntary services manager ensures that all our volunteers are well placed and receive the right training and support to guarantee the best possible service while supporting patients, carers, visitors and staff.
We encourage anyone interested in volunteering to telephone or email us first. We can then chat through available roles and answer any initial questions you may have.
''Our volunteers love coming into the hospital knowing that they are making a real difference to people's lives. We are proud of our volunteers and the enormous contribution they make.''
Julie Pointer - Voluntary Services Manager
The recruitment process begins by completing an application form and then attending an interview so that we can find out more about you. This process including planning of role placement can take anything up to ten weeks but the average is four.
We will ask you to complete a health questionnaire and a Disclosure and Baring Service form and we will also obtain two references from people who have known you over two years (not a member of your family).
Each year we celebrate our Volunteers at a long service ceremony - read about it here
We are now closed to recruitment but will reopen later this spring.
