Dr Foster Report

03/12/12

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has welcomed the findings of the 2012 Dr Foster Hospital Guide which has highlighted the quality and efficiency of our Hospitals.

In previous Hospital Guides, the focus was on reporting quality measures. For the first time, the 2012 Hospital Guide has a greater focus on efficiency metrics with the traditional quality measures to provide a comprehensive view of care.

The 2012 Hospital Guide includes thirteen measures of efficiency for each Trust and the Guide brings to light positive performance in the following areas:

  • 28 Day Emergency Readmissions
  • 7 Day Emergency Readmissions
  • Day Case Rate
  • DNA Rate
  • Admissions Where Procedure Not Performed

Director of Service Delivery Eric Gatling said:

“We are pleased to see that the guide has recognised our performance and are delighted to be among the best in the region.

“We are working hard to reduce our readmission rates and have investigated reasons why patients are re-admitted in order to minimise the chance of it happening in the future.

“As part of our work to reduce DNA rates where patients do not show up for their appointment is working well and we will continue to find ways of reminding patients about upcoming arrangements.

“We have also been highlighted for areas such as admissions where procedure not performed where our pre-admission clinics help us make sure our patients are only put on the waiting list and then invited to be admitted when they are fit, able and willing.

“The report identifies procedures at weekend as being an area we need to address as they felt it would be better to offer patients the option of having elective operations at weekends.

“However, our waiting lists are low and are being reduced further with the majority of non-urgent operations taking place on weekdays.  This has the added benefit of lower staffing costs and therefore makes the best use of time and resources available to us”.

The Hospital Guide will be published towards the end of November as both a printed document and online at www.drfosterhealth.co.uk
