Patient and Staff Travel Guidance

The following information has been provided to enable patients and staff to plan their times and route to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.  However, the knock-on effect to traffic flow in surrounding areas cannot be accurately predicted.

From the North

If you are approaching Gloucester from the North on the M5, Tewkesbury Road or Cheltenham along the A40 (Golden Valley), turn left at the roundabouts on the A417 (Longford and Elmbridge) towards the C&G Roundabout.  Turn right at the C&G Roundabout onto Corinium Avenue.  Go straight on at the Barnwood Roundabout onto Eastern Avenue.

At the Painswick Road Roundabout turn right onto Painswick Road until it becomes Barton Street.  At the set of traffic lights after the Barton Police Station, turn right onto Derby Road.  Keep going until the road becomes Horton Road.  After the railway crossing turn left onto Great Western Road towards Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

From the South

If you are approaching Gloucester from the South on the M5 or A38, plan to travel towards Eastern Avenue then onto Painswick Road.

From the A38, continue along Cole Avenue and Finlay Road until you reach the Painswick Roundabout and turn left.  The road then becomes Barton St, at the set of traffic lights after the Barton Police Station, turn right onto Derby Road.  Keep going until the road becomes Horton Road.  After the railway crossing turn left onto Great Western Road towards Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

From the M5, exit at Junction 11a and join Corinium Avenue towards Eastern Avenue.  At the Painswick Road Roundabout, turn right onto Painswick Road.  Follow directions as above.

From the East

If you are coming from the East on the A417, continue along to Corinium Avenue towards Eastern Avenue then follow the directions above from the M5.

People travelling into the City along Hucclecote/Barnwood Road should use Eastern Avenue to gain access to Barton Street as detailed from the M5 above.

Drivers on Painswick Road should remain on that road until it becomes Barton Street and turn right onto Derby Road.  Keep going until the road becomes Horton Road.  After the railway crossing turn left onto Great Western Road towards Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

From the West

Vehicles travelling from the West on the A40 and A417 over Westgate Bridge may have the most difficulty gaining access to the Hospital.  It is recommended that drivers take the following route.

After leaving the Over Roundabout, on the A417, drivers could turn right onto Castle Meads Way (signposted M5 South).  Stay on this road through Hempstead until reaching the Cole Avenue traffic lights.  Turn left and remain on Cole Avenue until it becomes Finlay Road.  At the Painswick Roundabout, turn left and remain on Painswick Road until it becomes Barton St.  At the set of traffic lights after the Barton Police Station, turn right onto Derby Road.  Keep going until the road becomes Horton Road.  After the railway crossing turn left onto Great Western Road towards Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

Remember:

Please note that closed roads will have a knock on impact on other roads, even those not directly affected by the Torch relay.

  • Other roads will not be subject to closure unless there are unforeseen circumstances, although these could be congested with traffic.
  • No parking will be allowed on roads where the Torch is being carried by Torch Bearers, this includes residents parking.
  • When in Torch Bearer mode, no traffic will be able to drive towards the procession.  This is for safety reasons.

The traffic plan may be subject to last minute alterations.  If an incident arises, the route may alter and additional road closures may be put in place.

Stay tuned into local radio and follow social media accounts such as @Glos_Police or @GlosCC on Twitter for the latest traffic updates.
