Award Winning Children's Diabetes Team
Our Paediatric Diabetes Team has just won a national award for Quality in Care in Diabetes as part of the Quality Care Programme 2016. They were the winners in the category for Patient Care Pathway for Children, Young People and Emerging Adults.
This award was specifically for the development of dedicated annual review clinics for children with Type 1 Diabetes.
Dr Susan Matthai said: “It is a real boost to our whole team to receive this award in recognition of the work we do and will encourage us to strive even harder on behalf of our patients.
“Diabetes is a very tough condition for children and families to live with, so our ethos has always been to be innovative and responsive to the needs of our patients.
“The whole of the paediatric diabetes team have worked extremely hard over many years to provide high quality care for the children attending our service. We have embraced new technology and new ways of working whenever we get evidence that it will be of help to our children and families.”
The awards entry for the review clinics was supported by positive feedback from patients. The clinics are run for all patients over the age of eight and involve a three hour afternoon clinic with a consultant appointment, retinopathy screening*, and annual bloods review. Patients and their families are also encouraged to participate in structured education sessions delivered by specialist nurses and diabetes dieticians.
Chief Executive Deborah Lee said; “I’d like to congratulate every member of the team for winning this award which is a clear indication of their hard work and dedication. It is a busy and challenging time for everyone, but the determination and commitment of our staff shines through and I know it means a lot to them to be recognised in this way.”
