Extraordinary everyday Healthcare Science Event

Extraordinary technology and science are being used every day behind the scenes by NHS specialists at Gloucestershire’s two largest hospitals.

Members of the public have the opportunity to take a look for themselves during the extraordinary everyday event  on Saturday June 8th and Sunday June 9th organised by specialists from Cheltenham General and Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals, as part of Cheltenham Science Festival.

This unique event gives everyone the chance to have a go with some of the most cutting-edge equipment available in healthcare and see, for example, how virtual reality is transforming the care and treatment of patients and the training of doctors.

During the weekend around 30 specialists will be on hand to demonstrate their skills, share their experience, show people how to use the equipment and talk to the public.

“We know from experience that people are fascinated by the science and technology behind healthcare, and as the second largest employer in Gloucestershire and one of the largest Foundation Trusts in the country, we wanted to play our part in the Science Festival and showcase some of the incredible advances taking place in our hospitals," said Yvonne Pirso, one of the extraordinary everyday organisers.

“We hope that local people and visitors to the Science Festival from across the UK will come along and meet the staff who put the technology and science into practice for the benefit of patients,” she added.

Tickets go on sale next week for the three themed workshop packages: Intricate Operations; No More Scalpels and Emergency Trauma. Each of the three workshops features three different specialist views and are repeated on both days – giving everyone the opportunity to experience all of the workshops if they wish.

However, the event is also suitable for families and who might like to visit our Free Have-a-Go Healthcare Science Zone featuring CT scanning of the brain and heart; virtual ear surgery; the impact of light on diagnosis; the truth behind the healthcare headlines and much more. The Science Zone is open from 9am – 4pm on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th June. The emphasis in both the Science Zone and the workshops is on trying your hand with some of the incredible technology available.

There will also be a café for refreshments, a giant children’s food mat game, a giant Operation game and you won’t be able to miss the enormous walk-through inflatable colon – outside the front doors of Sandford Education Centre!
