Full steam ahead for Hereford Satellite Radiotherapy Unit

29.01.13

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Wye Valley NHS Trust and Herefordshire PCT are delighted to announce that all outstanding issues relating to the new satellite radiotherapy unit at The County Hospital, Hereford have today been resolved.

The National Commissioning Board (which will take over the commissioning of radiotherapy services from PCTs on1 April 2013) was keenly aware of the PCTs previous longstanding public commitment to local people to secure the satellite unit.

February will see Mansell Construction beginning construction work at the site, which had been cleared in preparation in September last year. Project plans will now be refreshed to confirm the new opening date but it is anticipated that this will be in Spring 2014.

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will build, staff and manage the new unit, bringing to an end the long journeys for the majority of patients who currently have to travel to Cheltenham for radiotherapy.  The new unit will provide thousands of treatment sessions each year.
