Tremendous Trust Bake-off – the final bake

Following four nail biting rounds of culinary competition, the final bake in the Tremendous Trust Bake-Off 2014 takes place on Tuesday 8th April at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital (GRH).

The final will be judged by guest judges David Kelman, Executive Chef of Ellenborough Park and TV Chef Alan Coxon - The Food Archaeologist. The judges’ line up is completed by our Chair Professor Clair Chilvers and Chief Executive Dr Frank Harsent.

In successive rounds, entrants have presented all kinds of indulgent and mouth-watering dishes as well as some healthier choice treats. Competitors have cooked up amazing, creative and delicious cakes and pastries, with some entrants eliminated after each round passes.

The idea of holding a ‘bake off’ type event was initially raised at a Divisional General Managers meeting as a way to improve staff engagement. Organisers Lynsey Hawkins and Natasha Scott have driven the entire project, organising judges, booking venues and supporting members of staff, as well as nominating our chosen charities. They have also been supported by Bridget Campbell, one of the Catering Managers for the Trust whose catering knowledge has helped shape the competition and facilitated consistent judging throughout. Lynsey said: “The whole project has been an amazing opportunity for us. It’s been so great to see the talent and commitment of such talented bakers.”

The first three rounds were held at both Hospitals, with the fourth at GRH and the final now to be held in the kitchens at GRH – with live baking! The earlier rounds involved competitors baking their goods at home and bringing them in for judging together with their recipes.

Following each round, the remaining cakes have been auctioned off for charities including the British Heart Foundation, Philippines Typhoon Appeal and Endometriosis UK. There has been tremendous response to the cake sales on both sites.

Natasha sums it up: “We’re so excited for the final! It really has been a revelation to see just how much talent there is out there. We’d like to thank everyone who entered and all those who have supported the competition in every way. It’s been brilliant to raise money for our chosen charities along the way too.”

As entrants have submitted recipes with each round, we intend to compile an online recipe book following the competition. The standard has been fantastic all the way through, in terms of looks, taste and talent.
