  • Obligate, intracellular bacteria
  • Poorly stained gram negative rods
  • Classified into four species:
  • Chlamydia trachomatis
  • C.pneumoniae
  • C.psittaci
  • C.pecorum

Main clinical Infections:

  • Ocular
  • Genito-urinary
  • Respiratory

Usually sensitive to:

  • Doxycycline
  • Macrolides (Erythromycin, Clarithromycin, Azithromycin)
  • Fluroquinolones (Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin)

Usually resistant to:

  • Cephalosporins
  • Penicillins
  • Gentamicin
  • Vancomycin
  • Metronidazole
