Snowshill Ward

Snowshill Ward is a female surgical ward accommodating breast and urology patients with 18 beds divided in to four bays each with four beds and two single rooms.  It is situated in St Pauls Wing at Cheltenham General Hospital on the first floor where there is both stair and lift access.

What to Expect When you are Admitted to our Ward

On arrival you will be shown the ward facilities and taken to your bed. In the event of a bed not being immediately available you will be asked to wait in the day room and we will get you to your bed in time to prepare you for your operation.

You may be asked to report to Pamington Suite first, which is a Surgical Admissions Unit, and you may therefore not arrive at the ward until much later.  Your admission letter and details provided to you at the time of your pre-assessment appointment should have fully informed you about where to report to.

The nurses work in teams concentrating on the delivery of care to patients in their group. Your named nurse will be the trained nurse on duty each shift who is caring for your particular group, and he/she will answer any questions you or your family may have.

Once shown to your bed the nurse will check your details and place an identity band on your wrist. You will be visited by the anaesthetist who may prescribe a pre-medication usually in the form of tablets, which you will be given approximately one hour before your operation.

You may be given an injection of a low dose anticoagulant that helps to prevent the formation of clots in the deep veins while under anaesthetic or less mobile due to surgery. These injections are continued daily until discharge. You may also be fitted with white support stockings.  A member of your surgical team will mark the site with a skin pen.

Ward Rounds

Usually you will be seen by your Consultant's team daily.  All the teams have a Registrar in charge during your stay who will see you daily between 08:00am and 10:00am.

Lunch                                   12:30pm - 1:15pm

Supper                                 5.30pm - 6.15pm

Medicine Rounds

Medicines are routinely given out 4 times a day, unless otherwise directed by your medical team.  Nurses wear red tabards and we would ask that they are not disturbed whilst in the process of administering medications.  If you require pain relief outside of the normal 'rounds', please tell a member of the nursing team, who will advise if it is prescribed.

Mobile Phones

Please be aware that mobile phones or handheld devices should not be used to take photographs without permission.  We ask you to have your mobile phone on silent or vibrate to minimise distruption to other patients.  Please be considerate when taking calls, keep them to a minimum and we ask that no calls are made in patient areas between the hours of 10pm - 8am.

Discharge from hospital

We aim to tell you in good time when you are expected to be discharged from hospital.  We request that you make your own arrangements, wherever possible, to be collected from hospital by 10:00am on the day of your discharge.  If you have any concerns regarding your discharge, or do not know the expected date of your discharge, please ask the nurse in charge of your care.

If appropriate, a specific information sheet will be provided to you before your discharge from hospital with any necessary information and support that may be required.
