DCC Philosophy of Care

Our philosophy of care has been developed to support the overall values of the Trust.

Our Nursing philosophy is to deliver an excellent standard of holistic and evidence-based care to all patients, their relatives and carers from our team of experienced and educated health professionals.

We believe that all patients are individuals and we aim to meet their physiological, sociological and psychological needs as well as respecting their ethnicity and spiritual beliefs whilst acknowledging their rights to confidentiality, privacy and dignity.

We aim to restore health and quality of life whenever possible and to minimise distress and suffering to patients, their relatives and carers whatever the outcome of their stay.

We recognise that critical illness can affect anyone at any time.  Our aim is to provide high levels of quality, innovative care for our patients, and support their families and carers through what is often an emotional and challenging time.

We understand that the environment within a critical care unit can appear very different and daunting.  Nursing Staff will strive to maintain effective communication between themselves, other health professionals and patients and their families as well as being supportive, empathetic and sensitive.

We actively promote teaching, learning and development on our unit and aim to ensure excellent standards of care are maintained and monitored by following evidence-based and Trust-established practice.

We believe that we have a responsibility to exercise professionalism in every aspect of our practice by being resourceful, economical and responsive to change.
