ENT Ward 2b
Introduction to Ward 2b
Ward 2b is a surgical ward specialising in ENT, OMF and Orthodonic surgery. It is also the regional unit for head & neck oncology. It is located on the 2nd Floor of the Tower Block at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.
The ward provides most of the emergency service for ENT in its Treatment facility.
We have room for 22 patients in 5 single rooms & 4 bays. 3 bays have 4 beds & 1 has 5 beds in it. All bays & single rooms have toilet, shower & wash basin en suite. All bed areas have television & bedside telephone, for use with a pay card.
What to expect when you are admitted to our Ward
You may arrive on the ward as either an emergency patient or as part of a planned admission process. It may be that you will be transferred to the ward direct from theatres, if you arrived as a planned admission & were directed to first go to the Surgical Admissions suite (SAS). One of the first people you may meet on the ward is our ward receptionist, she liases with the nursing staff & will often be the first person to answer phone calls from your family & friends.
You will be allocated a bed as soon as possible, all rooms & bays are en suite. Single rooms are allocated by clinical priority only.
Please be aware that the Trust is now a smoke free NHS. Smoking is not permitted in any building or within the grounds of any of our sites. Information and support is available to any patients who wish to stop smoking. Nicotine Replacement Therapy is available to help reduce your cravings during your stay.
When will I see a Doctor? / Ward Round Information
Ward rounds occur Monday – Friday mornings about 08.00hrs, they happen a little later at weekends. However, some doctors have to cover services at Cheltenham General as well as Gloucestershire Royal so times of rounds can be variable, depending on the clinical needs of patients at each site. Just because a round is in progress does not mean you will be seen; it depends on whether it is your team of doctors responsible for your care: not all doctors look after every patient.
Medicine Rounds occur 4 times a day with pain relief available on request.
Visiting times are: - 3.00pm-4.30pm and 6.00pm-8:00pm. Please use the hand gel or wash basins available when you enter the ward. Washing your hands before & after patient contact all helps to reduce the risk of infection for yourself & the patient you are visiting.

Going Home / Discharge

The nurse on 2b responsible for your care on the day you go home will make arrangements with you regarding medicines, transport, appointments & other after-care. They will liase with the discharge loungue about this information.
