Navigation for Departments

Ophthalmology is the diagnosis and treatment of all eye problems, including injuries and medical disorders.

These medical disorders may involve the eye alone or the eye in association with other general medical conditions.

Ophthalmologists carry out a wide range of treatments and surgical procedures for conditions of the eye such as cataracts, glaucoma and retinal problems to name but a few. Ophthalmologists work very closely with Optometrists in the community and the hospital.

Services Provided

The Ophthalmology Department provides a comprehensive and efficient outpatient and surgical service to the local community and beyond.

The multidisciplinary approach to patient care means that the 14 Consultants and 1 locum Consultant are supported by a dedicated team of doctors, ophthalmic trained nursing staff, orthoptists and opticians all of whom strive to ensure patients receive first class care.

Many conditions are treated within the department including general ophthalmology, glaucoma, oculoplastic, medical retina with diabetes, lacrimal, paediatric and squint. If surgery is required most conditions are treated under local anaesthetic allowing patients to recuperate in their own home.

Eyford Ward, at Cheltenham General Hospital, is dedicated to providing a full range of primary and subspecialty eye care procedures.

Information leaflets are available for many of the conditions seen in the department and we encourage patients to ask questions in order to understand their treatment fully.
