Nurse Practitioners

There are four permanent Ophthalmic Nurse Practitioners in Gloucestershire - Julia, Jan, Heather and Jane.  The team has evolved over the past eight years and our newest addition is Ruth - a "trainee" Nurse Practitioner.

Our role is to provide expert nursing care and deliver treatments independently as well as contributing to the Ophthalmology team.  Most of the work we do was previously carried out by junior doctors.

All of our Nurse Practitioners are educated to Masters level and also have the qualifications to prescribe eye treatments.  We work predominantly at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital but also hold clinics at Stroud General Hospital.

Some of the clinics we perform are:

*  Minor lid procedures

*  Laser treament following cataract surgery

*  Blepharospasm clinics

*  AMD clinics

*  Post operative cataract checks

*  Fluorescein clinics

*  Photo-dynamic therapy clinics.

We also answer telephone calls on the emergency casualty line to GP's, opticians and patients who need advice on a daily basis.

Our working hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 5.30pm and there is always a Nurse Practitioner on duty at Cheltenham General Hospital or Gloucestershire Royal Hospital (usually both).

Our contact numbers are: 03004 228 358/ 03004 223 200
