Ganglion Impar Block

The ganglion impar is a small collection of nerve cells that forms the lowest end of the sympathetic chain of nerve tissues, carrying sensation from various organs (viscera) in the abdomen: the ganglion impar can be involved in carrying visceral pain from the rectum and lowest part of the bowel.  Injections to this ganglion can sometimes be used in attempting to relieve pain from this area.
