For completeness, because you may read about them elsewhere and because they are appropriate for a very few of the patients we see, we have included some information on surgical procedures that may be done inthe treatment of pain. These tend to be done by either the neurosurgeons in Frenchay Hospital or in other centres.
For certain types of very severe cancer pain a procedure called Percutaneous Cervical Cordotomy can be done. Occasionally, for certain types of pain in the face, an operation called Microvascular Decompression can be very useful, and there are other rarely performed procedures such as Dorsal Root Entry Zone Lesioning which we discuss in the pages from the menu on the right.
Occasionally, a procedure called Spinal Cord Stimulation can be used for certain types of pain. Again, this is performed by our colleagues at Frenchay Hospital.
