Notes

 

  • This test is rarely of diagnostic value in current infections; please send a urine sample for Legionella antigen
  • Legionella serology may be of value in epidemiological investigations as advised by the Health Protection team or Consultant Microbiologist
  • A rise in antibody titres may take up to 4-6 weeks following acute infection
  • Legionnaires' Disease is a notifiable disease.  Click for notification form.

Sample requirements

Serum - paired samples normally required

8.5ml of blood taken into a plain gel tube 

8.5mL BD Vacutainer tube

  • Date of onset
  • Relationship to other clinical cases
  • Occupation and exposure history

Storage/transport

Store at fridge temperature

Transport as soon as possible at ambient temperature
