Respiratory medicine is a sub-specialty of medicine encompassing diseases of the respiratory system. These include the upper airway, the lungs, the chest wall and the ventilatory control system.
Specialists in respiratory medicine deal with various diseases affecting the lungs including asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, COPD, pneumonia, cystic fibrosis and lung cancer. Along side this they provide treatment to assist ventilation when necessary. Sleep related breathing disorders such as obstructive sleep apnoea are also diagnosed and treated under the branch of respiratory medicine.
The respiratory team work together to provide the best possible care for patients suffering with acute and/or chronic conditions. This service is delivered through inpatient work at both Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General Hospitals and through outpatient clinics across the county.
Inpatient Services are based at:
Thoracic surgery is provided by Mr Rajesh from Heartlands Hospital Birmingham and Mr F Collins from Bristol Royal Infirmary. Each hold two clinics per month at Cheltenham General and Gloucestershire Royal.
There is also a Respiratory Assisted Discharge Scheme (RADS) which enables patients with respiratory problems to be discharged earlier than would otherwise be possible by supporting them in their homes. The team consists of three respiratory nurses, two respiratory physiotherapists and one health care assistant. For more information please see the patient leaflet Respiratory Assisted Discharge Scheme.
Consultant lead clinics are held at the following hospitals; Cheltenham General, Gloucestershire Royal, Stroud General, Tewkesbury, Cirencester, The Vale, North Cotswold, Dilke Memorial and Lydney. You will be seen in these clinics for general respiratory conditions and also allergies, suspected cancer and sleep disorders.
As part of your investigation you may be referred for further screening. This could be arranged for the same day or as a separate appointment for another service for example an X-Ray, a CT scan, a blood test, lung function tests, a sleep study, an allergy skin prick test or a bronchoscopy.
Please Note: not all services are provided at every location.
