Career role model: Jerome Ibarra
I have worked my way up from a Band 5 nurse on Neurology, Trauma & Orthopaedics to a Band 6 on Neurology, Dermatology & Rheumatology, then a Band 7 on Care of the Elderly before becoming the Matron on COTE & FAU. I was delighted to be the first Filipino matron at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital!

What was your first job?
Band 5 – Medical & Surgical nurse in the Philippines.
Why this specialty?
I am passionate about elderly care.
What obstacles have you faced and overcome?
Being part of a minority group, I felt before, that we have less opportunity to be promoted or to be part of the senior leadership team. I am very proud to say that I am the first Filipino matron in Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.
Did you have a mentor or role model?
Too many to mention, but they know who they are.
Do you have any tips for interviews and career progression?
Be yourself and find ways to learn and develop yourself personally and professionally.
What qualities are essential in your position?
A warm and sympathetic personality and the ability to work in a team.
Why Gloucestershire?
I started working in Gloucestershire as an overseas qualified nurse in 2002 and I always loved the place, and the people that I worked with.
