Why this specialty?

I began working within the Frailty Assessment Unit as a result of covid. Within this ward, we care for the elderly by minimising their risk of re-hospitalisation. I have since progressed to becoming a Sister within this ward and I particularly enjoy it as it enables me to make an impact on the lives of the elderly patients.

Can you outline your path to promotion?

I continued working as a nurse within the Frailty Assessment Unit, where I developed a positive relationship with my team and also became more accustomed to the standards and expectations of my role. As time went by, I naturally found myself helping fellow colleagues and being a point of contact.

Over time, this professional confidence gave me the push to seek continuous professional development in the form of being officially recognised as a ward Sister.

What obstacles have you faced and overcome?

I have faced some obstacles as a nurse within the Frailty Unit because the patients often have a diagnosis of dementia. This form of health difficulty can add further challenges because patients can often present as confused, become aggressive and interactions with their families and loved ones can also raise many emotions.

What role, if any, do you think that your race or ethnicity has played in your career progression?

My race has impacted my work productivity. As a black African woman, I have to work twice as hard for the same recognition as my counterparts; and for that reason, I am incredibly proud of my achievements to date and that they have been acknowledged.

Did you have a mentor or role model?

My first manager Alison Hunt was my role model - she has now retired, however she set a positive foundation into my nursing career and I will forever be grateful that we were connected.

Do you have any tips for interviews and career progression?

I would advise students to study hard, don't give up, stay focused and seek support when necessary. The latter will also be a necessary skill to have in practice.

What qualities are essential in your position?

These six 'Cs are very important to be a good leader: Care, Compassion, Courage, Communication, Commitment, Competence.

Why have you chosen to work in Gloucestershire?

I have resided in Gloucestershire for over 15 years and take pride in being of service to my city.
