Care of the Elderly

Ryeworth Ward at Cheltenham General specialises in care of the elderly. One nomination for the ward team said, “My team is truly the heart of our hospital: hardworking, compassionate, and endlessly dedicated.”

Colleagues went on to describe the valuable contributions that everyone makes to the team, saying, “Our HCAs go above and beyond, bringing joy and comfort, especially to our Dementia patients, with remarkable empathy. Our Nurses tirelessly bridge communication across teams and are proactive in diagnosing complex cases, as they did recently by catching signs of an infection during personal care. Our Doctors, despite severe understaffing, provide exceptional care. Our Junior Doctors’ attention to detail and willingness to stay late ensure thorough, patient-centred care. Our Therapy Team bring joy, humour and kindness to the ward, and our domestic staff also play their part in making our ward feel like a community.”

Despite the immense challenges and complex cases, several nominations confirmed that Ryeworth remains a joyful, supportive place thanks to the incredible team.

Adult diabetes MDT

Diabetes and Endocrinology

Adult Diabetes

The Diabetes Team is a dedicated, multidisciplinary group of consultants, specialist dietitians, nurses, and healthcare assistants, whose impact reaches across inpatient and outpatient services, maternity, and community care. Although relatively small, they play a vital role in supporting patients with diabetes, as well as other healthcare teams within the Trust.

Managing diabetes is complex; each patient may face up to 50 factors daily that affect blood glucose levels. Yet the team works tirelessly to empower patients to manage their condition through personalised education and support, whether in person or virtually. One colleague shared, “They go above and beyond to improve quality of life for those living with diabetes.”

Despite the challenges posed by new technologies and a growing patient population, the team remains committed to ensuring the highest quality care and advocating for their patients’ needs.

Stroke Specialist nurses

Stroke

Stroke specialist nurses

The Stroke Specialist Nurse team consists of eight dedicated nurses who work 365 days a year, from 7am to 10pm, ensuring timely interventions for stroke patients across Gloucestershire.

As the fastest team in the South West to admit patients to the Hyper Acute Stroke Ward following CT scans (SNAPP data, 2024), they play a crucial role in improving patient outcomes. "We pride ourselves on our prompt response to referrals, whether by phone or e-referrals," one team member shared.

Beyond direct patient care, the team provides simulation training for Medical Registrars and additional stroke education for the broader MDT. They are also involved in impactful research, including a study on the benefits of telephone TIA follow-ups and innovations like the NGT POD system, which aims to enhance patient care and reduce costs.

The team’s dedication to advancing the stroke service deserves recognition within the Trust.
