Empowering Young Lives: Supporting children with epilepsy in Gloucestershire

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects the brain and can cause seizures - sudden bursts of electrical activity in the brain that temporarily affects its function. Each person’s experience with epilepsy is unique, and it can impact people in different ways. It can develop at any age, but most commonly in people over 60 or in childhood. In Gloucestershire, there are approximately 500 children currently living with epilepsy.
Thanks to donations to our paediatric epilepsy department, we are able to fund items that are over and above the NHS provision. These include:
- State-of-the-art technology - We have been able to purchase specialist diagnostic equipment such as a wireless EEG monitor. This is used to check unusual activity in the brain.
- Counselling support - This helps children with epilepsy manage emotions, build confidence and develop coping strategies for stress, school and social challenges. It provides mental health and wellbeing support to reduce the risks of anxiety and depression.
- Patient/Peer Groups - A patient/peer support group is a community where individuals facing similar health conditions or challenges come together to share experiences, offer emotional support and exchange practical advice.
"We would like to thank everyone for supporting our paediatric epilepsy fund. Your kindness is making a real difference to the lives of young patients and their families, providing the specialist care and additional resources they need. We truly appreciate your generosity and hope you’ll continue to support or even start new fundraising efforts - we have very big ambitions to grow and help even more people in the future!"
