Meet the Gutsy Glos Patient Support Group
Helping to support local cancer patients and their loved ones every step of the way; from diagnosis through to life-changing surgery and beyond. The Gutsy Glos Patient Support Group offers a welcoming and informal meeting space for patients that have planned or recovering from radical treatment for oesophageal or stomach cancer. These group meetings give patients and their loved ones the chance to connect with others who have been through similar experiences. Healthcare professionals are also available at the meeting to help provide reassurance, information and answer any questions.
Kelly Weir, Upper GI CNS at Gloucestershire Hospitals, has seen the benefits of the group from both a professional and personal perspective.
“Every three months, around 40-70 patients meet in a space away from the hospital environment. It's amazing to see how people engage with each other - sharing ideas about recovery, lifestyle changes and managing survivorship. It really helps patients feel reassured and understand what they have been through as they reflect on their journeys.”
“Whilst the support group is led by patients, there are also members of the teams that looked after them in hospital; nurse specialists, dietitians, surgeons, oncologists and other health care members. It allows patients the opportunity to provide feedback which helps us enhance our services for the benefit of future patients. The group is funded thanks to donations and we want to say a huge thank you to anyone who chooses to donate or fundraise to help us continue supporting patients.”
“I would like to say what an excellent meeting it was on Monday. Mr. Hornby’s diagrams and explanation of the different operations were so clear and at just the right level for his audience. Also, his comments on life after surgery were very apt and encouraging. We always enjoy the meetings - both for the social side and for the information etc. we glean from the speakers and from talking to and listening to other patients and carers.” Patient Quote
