New Artificial Intelligence software is helping to deliver faster and more accurate treatment for local cancer patients
Thanks to your support, local cancer patients are benefitting from innovative auto-contouring software for radiotherapy planningThis state-of-the-art technology is helping to provide faster and more accurate treatment in our hospitals.
Most patients who have radiotherapy have a bespoke plan produced before their treatment begins. Everybody's anatomy is slightly different, so outlining has to be done on an individual basis and involves mapping out by hand the areas affected with cancer and any organs nearby.
Our new AI technology enables contours to be computer generated, creating precision outlines that increases treatment accuracy and reduces the risk of patients experiencing side effects. Around 2,000 patients a year will benefit from this software and will result in improved quality, safety and accuracy.
Auto-contouring software provides a real step forward for our Radiotherapy Department. We anticipate that this enhanced technology will significantly reduce the time taken for outlining. The increased accuracy of the outlines will also make a big difference for our patients, helping to lower the risk of treatment side effects and increasing the chance of tumour control.
