As well as red blood cells and white blood cells, the blood also contains platelets. Platelets prevent bleeding.

If you have a low platelet count, you are more prone to bleeding.

Bleeding may occur from your nose, and gums or you may see blood in your urine or stool. You are likely to bleed a lot if you cut yourself.

To help prevent bleeding and bruising, you can:

  • Use an electric razor
  • Avoid contact sport
  • Be extra careful when gardening and doing DIY

Call the Acute Haematology Oncology Unit (AHOU) if you are experiencing:

    • A red or purple rash or bruising that is increasing in size in more than one area.
    • You are concerned about any bleeding or unusual bruising.
