- Brucella abortus is associated with cattle, sheep and goats
- Human brucellosis is also known as undulant fever or Mediterranean fever
Sample requirements
- Serum - paired samples normally required
8.5ml of blood taken into a plain gel tube - Consider taking blood cultures.
Required information
- Relevant clinical details – exposure to cattle, sheep, goats and farms. Consuming unpasteurised milk products.
- Date of onset.
- Occupational history, e.g. veterinary surgeon, farm worker.
- Travel history - particularly the Middle East
Storage/transport
Store at fridge temperature
Transport as soon as possible at ambient temperature
Turnaround time
Samples are referred to the National Reference Centre
Results can take up to 30 days.
