Coxiella burnettii nucleic acid detetion assays (e.g. PCR) can be performed on an EDTA blood sample. Please discuss with the laboratory.

Sample requirements

Serum - paired samples normally required

8.5ml of blood taken into a plain gel tube

• Relevant clinical details
  
• Date of onset
  
• Occupational history, e.g. veterinary surgeon, farm worker
  
• Endocarditis history
  

Storage/transport

Store at fridge temperature

Transport as soon as possible at ambient temperature

Turnaround time

7–10 days

Positive results are referred to a Regional Reference Centre, so may take longer
