- Used to detect Enterovirus virus in hand, foot and mouth lesions
- Enterovirus IgM testing is no longer available as an alternative to swabbing. If concerned over appropriate test, advice form the Consultant Medical Microbiologist should be sought.
- There is no immunity test for Enterovirus. It is not possible to test for immunity in patients in contact with suspected hand, foot and mouth disease
Sample requirements
Check swab expiry date before use
(Date is in YYMMDD format)
The vesicle should be de-roofed and the swab ground into the base of the lesion
Place swab into virus transport tube
The following alternative samples can also be used for Enterovirus detection
- EDTA samples
- Stool Sample ·
- CSF Enterovirus PCR Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF, meningo, encephalitis), optimal test for Enterovirus meningitis.
