  • Rotaviruses cause diarrhoea and vomiting most frequently in young children
  • Peak incidence occurs in the cooler months
  • Incidence has decreased since the introduction of the Rotovirus vaccine
  • Stool samples are routinely tested on patients under the age of 7 years
  • The test is by antigen detection
  • The laboratory does not accept vomit samples

Do not contaminate with urine

For liquid stools do not fill pot more than half full

  • Relevant clinical details
  • Recent Rotavirus vaccination

Storage/transport

Transport as soon as possible. If transport is delayed, refrigeration is preferable to storage at room temperature.

Positive results within 24 hours Monday to Friday

2 - 5 days otherwise
