Notes

  • Testing is typically arranged via Gloucestershire Sexual Health Services (GU Medicine).
  • The test is only validated for male urine samples and vulvo-vaginal swabs. These can be selftaken.
  • Urine samples from female patients are relatively insensitive and are not recommended.
  • This test is for Mycoplasma genitalium in genital tract samples. There is no nationally available test for Ureaplasma spp or Mycoplasma hominis in genital tract samples.

Sample requirements

25mL sterile urine tube

Urine specimen kit

Urine

  • Collect 10–30 mL of a first catch urine sample (a minimum of 5 mL urine is required) in cisgender men
  • Prior to sampling, the patient should not have urinated for at least an hour.
  • Boric acid containers are NOT suitable.

Swab

  • Vulvo-vaginal Swab
  • A clinician or self-taken vaginal swab in cisgender women.

Required information

  • Please provide relevant clinical details of urethritis, cervicitis, PID, dates of contact with other cases. Antibiotic exposure.
  • Consider referral to Sexual Health Services and testing for HIV.

Storage/transport

  • Store urine at 2–30°C for up to 24 hours.
  • Store transferred urines and swabs in their Aptima transport medium at 2–30°C. These remain viable for up to 30 days.
  • Transport as soon as possible at ambient temperature.

Turnaround time

Typically tested twice a week so up to 4 days.
