- Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus) is the prime cause of bacterial sore throat
- If diphtheria is suspected, contact the Consultant Microbiologist before submitting samples for investigation
- In all cases of recent foreign travel, diphtheria will be looked for automatically

Sample requirements
Standard charcoal transport swab
Apply the swab firmly to the fauces
Place swab into transport medium
Required information
- Travel history
- Date of onset
- Membranous or pseudomembranous pharyngitis/tonsillitis
- Sore throat. Red throat. Rash.
- Penicillin allergy
- Recent, current and intended antibiotics
Storage/transport
Store and transport at room temperature. Samples should be transported to the laboratory with minimal delay.
Turnaround time
- Negative: 24 hours
- Positive: 48 hours
Significant results will be issued on the next working day after receipt.
