Tom, a current multimedia apprentice and Sam, his supervisor and former apprentice share their experience as a Gloucestershire Hospital apprentice.

Current multimedia apprentice Tom started his apprenticeship in October 2019.

“I was looking for a multi-media apprenticeship and this really stood out. I didn’t really know what to expect, but there’s lots of variety and I’m enjoying it. I spend one day a week going to Cirencester College and everything I learn can then be applied to the workplace.

“The best thing about the apprenticeship here is it that it feels like I’m part of something bigger – that’s really important to me. I’d definitely recommend an apprenticeship, it’s the best decision I‘ve made!”

Sam, who supervises Tom was an apprentice himself from 2015 – 2016 here at Gloucestershire Hospitals and now works as a Multimedia Developer. He won apprentice of the year at the annual staff awards and at the Gloucester Citizen and Echo Apprenticeship Awards in 2016.

“Having been an apprentice myself previously, I put myself forward to be a mentor of a current apprentice. I hope that I am able to understand some of the challenges faced and help wherever possible. From a personal point of view, I’d also like to get more experience in people management and I’m currently doing an ILM Level 3 course which finishes in April.

“An apprenticeship is a really rewarding experience, and the organisation is continuing to develop me. You learn not only work skills, but also social skills and it rounds and builds you as a person.”
