Midwifery at Gloucestershire Hospitals
We look forward to welcoming you to our dedicated, supportive and passionate midwifery team.
Being a Gloucestershire Midwife
We look after women and birthing people across Gloucestershire and provide care for more than 6,000 families every year from our consultant led-unit at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and our three midwifery-led birth units in Gloucester, Cheltenham and Stroud. We aim to ensure that all women and birthing people have access to the right birth environment for them according to their choice.
Working across our units and in our community, whether over months, weeks or hours, you will develop trusting relationships with people through a life-changing experience, using your professional skills and knowledge to support them on this journey.
Gloucestershire is a wonderful place to live and work, find out more about what we have to offer.
Maternity services in Gloucestershire
Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT) has approximately 6,000 births per year.
Our Women’s Centre accommodates a Delivery Suite, which undertakes approximately 4,000 births a year and provides a high level of maternity care for women who require obstetric, neonatal or anaesthetic services. We have a 46 bedded mixed Antenatal and Postnatal ward and are BFI accredited.
We also have three fantastic Birthing Centres, which provide midwifery led care for approximately 30% (2,000) of women in Gloucester, Cheltenham and Stroud. Midwives working within our Trust have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings including the community, making full use of their skills to promote woman and person centred, holistic care.
Our midwifery-led care model is already well developed, providing choice and personalised care to women and birthing people. However, we have an ambition to take our services to the next level by further developing midwives’ contribution to public health. This is a priority in order to improve health outcomes for women and birthing people in the county.
We have a large team comprising midwives, maternity care assistants, maternity support workers and obstetricians, we work closely with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
