Background

A new Specialist Stroke Rehabilitation Unit has been created at the Vale Community hospital to give people in Gloucestershire who have suffered a stroke the maximum opportunity to recover in the best possible environment. This new sub-acute stroke unit is for people who no longer require specialist medical care at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, but need more support than can be provided at home by the Stroke Early Supported Discharge Team (ESDT). A 6 month training & development post was created to ensure all clinical staff have the necessary skills & knowledge to support stroke rehabilitation.

Aim

Using a standardised training & development pathway, 95% of substantive staff who are new to stroke will achieve at least 4 stroke specific competencies required at the new stroke unit by July 2019.

Method

  • 95% of substantive staff new to stroke to have completed the Stroke Training and Awareness Resources (STARS) eLearning core competencies by July 2019.
  • 50% of staff to have completed the Stroke Education Programme at GRH by July 2019.
  • 90% of staff to have attended at least 4+ stroke internal training sessions by July 2019.
  • 90% of staff to self-report confidence in stroke rehabilitation by July 2019.

Results

  • 97% of substantive staff new to stroke had achieved 4 or more stroke specific competencies by July 2019.
  • 100% of substantive staff new to stroke completed the Stroke Training and Awareness Resources (STARS) eLearning core competencies by July 2019.
  • 46% of staff have completed the Stroke Education Programme at GRH.
  • 100% of staff have attended at least 3+ stroke internal training sessions.
  • 100% of staff that completed the staff survey self-reported confidence in stroke rehabilitation.

Implications

The training programme has contributed to staff becoming more knowledgeable, skilled and competent in stroke rehabilitation. The Stroke Unit at The Vale is now on its way to becoming a centre of excellence where patients receive high quality evidenced-based treatment. These standards need to be maintained and strengthened through a rolling stroke training programme.
