Role of the PEF team

The role of the PEF team is to ensure the provision of quality learning environments for all pre-registration learners within GHNHSFT. The PEFs facilitate nurses, midwives and other suitably prepared staff to undertake student supervision and assessment as practice supervisors and/or practice assessors, which are the NMC designated roles in practice learning environments.

They offer support on educational issues to any learner, Practice Assessor or Practice Supervisor at GHNHSFT. This may include:

  • Providing on-site support to learners/staff with educational concerns/queries
  • Information on the completion of learner documentation
  • Support with the failing learner
  • Support with learners requiring reasonable adjustments
  • Information on university curriculums/requirements

Contacting your placement area

Your AEI, will have provided you with details about your upcoming placement and contact details. Please get in touch with them prior to starting your placement. They will be able to answer any questions specific to the clinical placement area and inform you of any preparation or reading you should complete prior to placement. You may wish to organise a pre-placement visit. You can also make off duty requests, but please note, these are not guaranteed.

Objectives and supervision

It may be useful to give your Practice Assessor/Practice Supervisor an idea of your experience to date and any information regarding previous learning objectives. You will be given the opportunity to discuss and set your new placement objectives with your Practice Assessor. Please organise your midpoint and end point assessments at the start of the placement.

If you have an access plan or health ability passport in place we strongly advise you share this with your Practice Assessor as soon as possible so they can make reasonable adjustments or arrange additional support for you. It can be difficult to make these adjustments once your placement has started. Please contact the PEF Team if you would like any further advice on this.

About our Trust

The Trust provides acute hospital services from two large district general hospitals, Cheltenham General Hospital (CGH) and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital (GRH). Maternity Services are also provided at Stroud Maternity Hospital. Outpatient clinics and some surgery services are provided by Trust staff from community hospitals throughout Gloucestershire. The Trust also provided services at the satellite oncology centre in Hereford County hospital.

Induction process

All mandatory training should be completed at your university prior to any clinical placement experience. This has been agreed between GHNHSFT and the AEIs and you will be unable to come out on placement until this has been completed.

You will have access to a Trust induction video via the university ARC PEP pages. Please watch all of this to the end. In addition, you will receive a local induction to your placement area from your Practice Assessor or Supervisor, or a member of their team.

Please bring your university ID on your first day.

Uniform

Please wear your uniform on your first day and have your university ID and name badge visible. The induction video gives a link to further reading regarding the uniform policy.

Sickness and absence

If you are unwell or unable to attend placement please contact the placement area by telephone and follow up with an email to the student link. You will also need to inform your university via their absence reporting process.

Library Services

We have libraries on the Cheltenham General Hospital and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital site. Our onsite libraries offer access to books, journals and e-resources and have designated study areas. They provide resources, information, and training to staff and students on placement at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust https://www.gloshospitals.nhs.uk/our-services/services-we-offer/library-and-knowledge-services/

Should you wish to join the library, please use this link.

Smoking

GHNHSFT is a smoke free organisation. Smoking tobacco, including the use of electronic cigarettes is not permitted anywhere on Trust premises. This includes all buildings and grounds including car parks and Trust vehicles.

IT access

You will be asked to complete an IT access form. This needs completing and returning promptly, to enable IT to generate your log in details prior to the start of placement. You will be issued with the appropriate IT access for your placement area by the Ward/Department Manager. If you have any student nurse IT issues please email ghn-tr.student.it@nhs.net

Accommodation

There is a limited amount of accommodation at GHNHSFT. If you require accommodation during your placement please contact the PEF team who will be able to signpost you.

Nursing Student Forum

The Nursing Student Forum takes place on the last Tuesday of the month 9:00 – 12:30. They are primarily face to face at Redwood Education Centre or Sandford Education Centre, but are occasionally on MS Teams.
The Nursing Student Forum is facilitated by one of the PEF team and allows students to come together to share experiences, ask questions and receive support from other learners and the PEF. Details of the Nursing Student Forum.

Student Notice Board

In each placement area, there is a designated student notice board with useful information. Please ask your Practice Assessor/Practice Supervisor to show you where the notice board is at the start of your placement. If you have any suggestions of resources that could be added to the student notice board, please contact the PEF team – we value your feedback.

We hope you have a fantastic placement experience and do contact the PEF team if you have any queries.
